Your brain on nicotine

A few days ago, I ran into an incredible article.

The article is called “The One-Two Punch” and it basically explains how scientists at BNL discovered by accident that not only do cigarettes stimulate release of the feel good drug but they also destroy the “kill joy” chemical MAO B (remember MAO inhibitors …they make you feel gooood). This MAO B is supposed to make away with the dopamine and bring us back to our miserable mediocre selves.

” Nicotine has long been known to stimulate the release of dopamine. Now, research by scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in New York points toward — but does not prove — another mechanism for cigarette addiction. They’ve found something in cigarette smoke that seems to be slowing the breakdown of dopamine.”

What a “shiznit” drug! Its cocktail of over 4,000 chemicals includes a mile long security blankie to make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Good job Philip Morris and British American Tobacco. Congratulations for a genius product, one that rivals sex.
